Service of TENEBRAE

Description:

Tenebrae will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the main sanctuary.

Tenebrae (Latin for "shadows" or "darkness") is a service celebrated on the evening before Maundy Thursday, as a prelude and preparation for the events surrounding the Crucifixion and Resurrection. The principal Tenebrae ceremony is the gradual extinguishing of candles upon a stand in the sanctuary called a Tenebrae hearse, one candle after each of 14 psalms are read. The six altar candles are put out during the Benedictus, and then any remaining lights in the church. The last candle is hidden beneath the altar, ending the service in total darkness. A strepitus (Latin for "great noise"), is made by slamming a book shut, banging a hymnal or breviary against the pew, or stomping on the floor, symbolizing the earthquake that followed Christ's death. The candle is  brought back out and shown to the people, then it is extinguished. All rise and leave in silence.
